Police search for suspect after officer killed in Chicago

Cmdr. Paul Bauer was shot several times by the armed assailant while assisting a tactical team near a state government building at around 2 p.m., police said. Officers sent out a description of the suspect over police radio, and Bauer spotted the suspect at the Thompson Center and confronted him.

"It's a hard day for us", Chicago Police Department Superintendent Eddie Johnson told reporters. Commander Bauer, who was in uniform and had just completed a training exercise nearby, intervened to try and stop the man, who reportedly opened fire. She said she could not tell if either was an officer.

An officer found Bauer shot in a stairwell after apprehending the suspect and recovering his firearm.

Police warned locals to get off the streets before shots were fired.

"They just seemed to be searching him and taking off articles of clothing", Mr. Rodriguez said. I heard that the door is locked there. "And I said to the girl next to me, 'Is that what I think it is?' And she said 'Yep.' ..."

"His death is a tragic reminder of the risky duty the men and women of our police department accept to ensure the safety of us all", Emanuel said in a statement.

His death marks the fifth time that an officer has been shot and killed across the nation in a little over a week-span, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page, which tracks such deaths. Information is still coming in at this time, but I wanted you to know as soon as possible.

"They actually had us locked in Walgreens", one person in the area told CBS.

Gov. Bruce Rauner tweeted: "Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and colleagues of the officer tragically lost in a shooting at the Thompson Center today".

Commander Bauer is survived by his wife and daughter. Many workers said they could not get back into the buildings.
