North Korea leader Kim Jong Un invites South Korean president to summit

South Korean president to meet sister of North Korean leader

The joint North and South Korean women's ice hockey team created history as they competed on the first day of action at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

Pence met with President Moon Jae-in to advocate a clear-eyed approach toward his bellicose, nuclear-armed neighbor, warning against North Korean use of the games to paint a false picture of itself. That was the clearest sign yet of an expanding diplomatic opening opposed by the Trump administration.

It would be the first summit in more than a decade between Korean leaders.

Moon's visit is highly possible, if South Korea and the United States downscale their military exercises, while DPRK agrees to freeze its nuclear program and stop testing missiles, he added.

"Our resolve to stand with you is unshakable", Pence said.

"South Korea has some hard homework to solve regarding some countries", President Moon said in a speech before Pence arrived. She had been sent to study overseas at a school in Switzerland when she was about eight or nine years old, the professor said, although few details are known about her time there.

"Now is not the time to postpone U.S".

Among the crowd was a large number of North Korea's all-female "Army of Beauties" cheer squad, known for their tightly choreographed moves and chants.

"We should firmly keep in mind that any talks where denuclearisation is not a precondition only buy North Korea more time to complete its nuclear capabilities while they fool us with their peace offensive fa├žade", said Chang Je-won, spokesman for the Liberty Korea Party. They said Pence could have opted to sit with the USA delegation and avoided the box that included the North Koreans.

"South Korean television drew that exact parallel, noting that Kim Jong Un had sent his sister to the Opening Ceremonies of the Olympic Games, while President Trump was sending his daughter to the closing", the paper observed. Days later, TV news shows in South Korea are still repeatedly airing footage of Kim walking with President Moon Jae-in, often with a placid smile on her face.

The 23rd Winter Olympics in South Korea's eastern county of Pyeongchang had generated great interest as the world awaits to see if the leaders of the two Koreas meet at the opening ceremony of the games on Friday or after.

The protesters set the flag alight along with a portrait of Kim Jong Un, whose sister was due to watch a Northern musical display with the South's President at a nearby theatre in Seoul.

"This season wasn't that good for me - it has been up and down", she said.

The North Korean artists performed Thursday in Gangneung, a coastal city that will host the skating, hockey and curling events during the games, and are to perform again in Seoul.

Moon has supported US -led sanctions against the North, but he has repeatedly called for dialogue.

Some observers suspect Pyongyang of cozying up to Seoul as part of a strategy aimed at weakening worldwide sanctions as well as driving a wedge between South Korea and the United States, its longtime ally.

Pence only stood for the USA team, according to the Associated Press, though others seated near Pence stood and applauded for the Korean delegation.

Mr Pence meanwhile, will use his appearance at the games in to call on the global community to get tougher on North Korea's nuclear ambitions.

The delegation has been in the country since arriving Friday to attend the PyeongChang Winter Olympics.

Security for anything involving the North Koreans has been exceptionally tight.

He also ratcheted up his rhetoric on the North's human-rights abuses in a speech to USA service members at Yokota Air Base in Japan. "Those who dare raise their voices in dissent are imprisoned, tortured and even murdered, and their children and grandchildren are routinely punished for their family's sins against the state".

In August 2009, then South Korean President Lee Myung-bak met with a condolence delegation led by DPRK senior officials in Seoul.
