New Government Budget Deal Does Not Include DACA

Paul Ryan’s Own Staff Applauds Nancy Pelosi After Record Breaking House Speech

The California Democrat followed her surprise announcement that she would oppose a budget deal to avert a government shutdown with a talk-a-thon to protest congressional inaction on legislation to protect DREAMers, undocumented immigrants who were brought to the United States when they were children. After President Trump ended the program a year ago, Democrats pushed for the protection of Dreamers to be included in last month's short-term spending bill.

"We've laid out what we would like to see in immigration legislation and I think it's something Nancy Pelosi should support and hopefully she'll come on board", Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said during a White House briefing Wednesday.

House rules allow the minority leader to speak as long as needed. Pelosi began talking just after 10 a.m. EST, telling stories of Dreamers' successes and contributions in the U.S. She reportedly had requested her staff to solicit the accounts from other members of Congress earlier that morning.

The activists who filled a Washington church Wednesday, like liberal leaders nationwide, called out Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer by name.

After a brief shutdown last night, Congress passed another temporary budget resolution to fund the federal government through March 23.

"Unlike in the Senate, there is no agreement that the House will even consider legislation to protect DREAMers", Hoyer wrote in response to a member's question of how to vote on the budget plan.

Democratic Rep. Tim Ryan of OH told Business Insider that while he thought Pelosi's speech was warranted and the right cause, it was unclear whether moderate members looking to avoid a shutdown would hold the line. If and when DACA protections are restored, Pelosi's talkathon may be remembered as a landmark.

Pelosi's speech was the longest on record on the House floor, CNN quoted House Historian's office, as saying. "I have an unease with it, and I hope that the Speaker will man up and decide that we in the House can also have what Mitch McConnell guaranteed in the Senate, a vote - a vote on the floor".

"Either the president does not understand the immigration laws he's trying to change, or he is intentionally misrepresenting them to the public in order to pass his own agenda", Democratic Congresswoman Judy Chu said Tuesday. During her speech, Pelosi read personal stories from Dreamers and cited Bible passages.

"I would have gone to the bathroom well before then, I gotta tell you", he joked.
