Nathan Chen says poor short program due to mental issue

American teenage figure skating phenomenon Nathan Chen said he could unleash his fabled routine of five quads as he bids to snatch Olympic gold from an ailing Yuzuru Hanyu.

According to PEOPLE, Tara Lipinski called it "first-ever quad flip [a kind of quad jump] in the Olympic Games", despite the fact Chen did not execute it perfectly. His planned a second quad jump, a quad toe, but doubled it instead. Then, Chen fell on his triple axel, a jump that has been his nemesis throughout his career.

He finished in fourth place in the phase, and earned Team USA seven points. Disappointed that he didn't perform to the best of his ability; disappointed, in his words, that he had let his teammates down. "I'm constantly reminding myself to do the simplest thing, which is to breath. I just didn't think I would be the athlete that I was again after my surgery". She came in second at Nationals and was sent to represent Team USA in Vancouver at 16, where she placed fourth.

When the men's scores and pairs' scores were added, Canada led the team event followed by the US and Japan. "We'll train for it, we'll start practicing maybe more often in the morning", he said.

The team event continues Sunday and Monday.

Uno cracked the 100-point barrier with his first place score of 103.25 points. He won the Grand Prix Final by half a point ahead of Japan's Shoma Uno. "Let the team down" was the first thing I thought. "In particular, all the pair elements I think were very good; our twist, our throw, our death spiral, the lift, all the pair stuff, and we'll look forward to a cleaner jump".

The skater admitted to being sleepy during early morning practice.

"When I stepped on the ice in the last two Olympics, I felt defensive", Chan told Sportsnet in a recent interview. This is Chan's third Olympics.

"I'm competing in global dance so I'll be doing the Silver Samba", she said. "That is going to be the greatest satisfaction in everything". We won't make the decision until after tomorrow. "I just want to come out of this competition proud of what I've done". Team Germany, who isn't considered to be in medal contention in the team event, is in eighth place after the two events.

However, Chan finished third after several other competitors also stumbled in the opening event of the team competition. He's been an athletic marvel on the ice since he was 10-years-old, and the youngest U.S. Novice Champion.

US skater Nathan Chen suffered a drastic fall within minutes of his Olympic performance.

Suzaki and Kihara scored a season-best 57.42 points in the pairs short program won by Olympic Athletes from Russia Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov, who scored 80.92.

The pairs team of Kim Kyu-eun and Kam Kang-chan ranked at the bottom with 52.10 points.

The pair scored 69.75 points for their short program, beating their previous season's best by almost 4 points.

"We're a strongly connected team", said Radford.

"With a fall, you can not be satisfied".

"This is the first time and I like it that we keep writing history", he added. I am a little bigger than the other skaters in the upper body, and when I get really tight it really affects the jumps.

The Gangneung venue is where the Knierims returned to competition exactly a year ago, after Scimeca Knierim recovered from multiple abdominal injuries. In order to participate in the Olympic team event, a country needs to have qualified skaters in at least three disciplines. Kaori Sakamoto is set to skate in the women's long program. The team competition concludes on Monday (Sunday) in the USA with the men's free skate and the free dance.

Shortly after Chen's meltdown the International Olympic Committee's handling of the Russian doping controversy took center ice.

All competitions can be watched live on: NBC or on and the free NBC Sports app.
