LaLiga: Barcelona drop points against Getafe

Yerry Mina

Ernesto Valverde claimed Barcelona's hectic schedule had caught up with them as the unbeaten La Liga leaders were held to a goalless draw by Getafe at the Nou Camp.

Barcelona's lead at the top of the La Liga table has been cut to six points after Atletico Madrid beat Malaga on 10 February.

Diego Simeone's team hasn't been this close to the lead since a year ago, when the gap was at six points in the 16th round.

For only the fourth time this season, Barcelona dropped points, drawing 1-1 with city rivals Espanyol.

Barcelona dominated but wasn't able to create many significant scoring chances, and when it got close it was stopped by Getafe goalkeeper Vicente Guaita.

Luis Suarez's first-half goal was correctly disallowed, after the Uruguay striker strayed offside as he volleyed home Messi's free-kick.

"This league is never easy, we'll have to work hard", he explained in his post-match press conference.

Repeating the feat this season looks a distinct possibility with their impressive form across all competitions, Barca already running away with the league with 18 wins and four draws from 22 matches.

"It's been positive for us that both have played", he said. Valverde added: "We need to reactivate ourselves for that game, it's an important game".

Yerry Mina and Lucas Digne are playing in central defence with injuries keeping Samuel Umtiti and Gerard Pique out.

Inconsistent in defense, Mina was a constant threat on set pieces in attack, almost scoring with a header in the second half.

Ousmane Dembele also misses out while Andres Iniesta is rested.

Earlier this season, Barcelona defeated Getafe 2-1, with Denis Suárez and Paulinho scoring second-half goals.

However, Sergio Rico, who starred throughout the match with several sharp saves, spared his team-mate's blushes to deny Aday with a fine stop to his right and keep the score goalless at the break.

Sevilla is sixth in the standings, one point behind Villarreal.
