Four Democratic Governors Band Together Against Gun Violence

The four Democrats announced the formation of "States for Gun Safety" on Thursday, about a week after the mass shooting at a Florida high school.

The governors of Connecticut, New York, New Jersey and Rhode Island have created a coalition of like-minded states on gun control, promising to expand existing efforts to share information on illegal guns, and ultimately make progress on gun safety measures where they contend the federal government has faltered.

Raimondo said she will also push legislation in Rhode Island to address laws that allow military-style weapons, that allow high-capacity ammunition magazines and that allow carrying a concealed weapon in schools and government buildings. "The only thing it would do is bring more guns into the school, more money for gun manufacturers, which is what the NRA is really trying to say", Cuomo said.

"We need to revolutionize the way the way the way we look at guns, like what we did with cigarettes", the director of the CDC's National Center for Inquiry Prevention and Control said in 1994.

"Gun violence is not a New Jersey problem, or a NY problem, or a problem for any particular state or region - it is a national problem", said Governor Murphy. The governors are saying they can not wait for the federal government to act, noting the "utter and complete inaction by Congress".

Under the new coalition, a multi-state task force will be created to trace and intercept illegal guns in the region.

"I don't understand why I can still go in a store and buy a weapon of war", Parkland student Samuel Zeif said.

"I think this was a wake-up call for all of us to work together", he said. "Rather than wait for the federal government to come to its senses and pass responsible gun safety legislation, NY is joining with New Jersey, Connecticut and Rhode Island to take matters into our own hands. Without possessing this collective information, each state is not necessarily in the best position to determine fitness and suitability of a gun applicant or owner", the memorandum of understanding says.

NY will now share that information with the other states.

The New York State Rifle and Pistol Association and the National Rifle Association did not immediately reply to a request for comment on the announcement by the four governors. The coalition of governors also will launch a Regional Gun Violence Research Consortium to research gun violence. The consortium will be comprised of dedicated public health, social welfare, public policy, and criminal justice experts who will share and examine data to better inform policymakers nationwide.
