White House officials briefing reporters travelling with the vice president said it would be fair to say that both Pence and the North Koreans rebuffed Moon's efforts to facilitate a meeting between North Korea and the U.S.

Pence is leading the US delegation to the opening ceremonies, where he has worked to pour cold water on warming ties between the two Koreas.

Just before the opening ceremony, Kim Yong Nam attended a dinner for visiting foreign dignitaries hosted by Moon.

"The Winter Olympic Games gave an opportunity for North and South Korea to get together, shake hands and talk about peace in Korea as opposed to fear, fire and fury, intimidation, bullying and an arms race that the U.S. brings to the region".

She is believed to be a major player in the North Korean government, effectively controlling the country's public relations, for lack of a better term.

South Korea says the artists will return to the North on Tuesday by a land route.

"We haven't requested a meeting with North Korea, but if I have any contact with them — in any context — over the next two days, my message will be the same as it was here today: North Korea needs to once and for all abandon its nuclear and ballistic missile ambitions", Pence said.

Analysts say that the missiles, which were successfully flight tested three times previous year, could potentially reach deep into the USA mainland when perfected. They said Pence could have opted to sit with the United States delegation and avoided the box that included the North Koreans.

"He has never been considered a threat to the regime", said professor Yang Moo-jin of the University of North Korean Studies. "But he stayed there the entire time. and talked to Moon and Abe and their spouses, and the North Koreans sat in the back and didn't talk to anybody, and that image is telling".

Pence spoke at a memorial in Seoul that was prepared to remember 46 South Korean sailors after their ship was sunk in 2010.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un invited South Korean President Moon Jae-in to Pyongyang "at an early date".

"I think this overture towards South Korea is partly sanctions-related, and also related to the fact that it's clear a divergence has developed between Washington and Seoul's most keenly desired goals in the near term", said Andray Abrahamian, a research fellow at Pacific Forum CSIS in Hawaii.

"The firm trilateral relationship will never be shaken", Abe said.

A smiling Moon shook hands with each of the delegates before talks took place.

Moon apparently cited the conditions necessary for an inter-Korean summit.

The first hockey match featuring the joint North-South women's ice hockey will be held Saturday night - they play Switzerland, where both Kim Jong Un and his sister went to school when they were children - and that would be an event she might want to see.

The delegation of 22 officials from the North arrived on Friday in order to attend the opening ceremony for the Winter Olympics.

The two Koreas have been divided since the conflict ended in a ceasefire in 1953, and the democratic South has risen to become the world's 11th-largest economy, while the North has stagnated under the Kim family's rule.

The warm reception was at odds with the position taken by USA vice-president Mike Pence. Kim Jong Il's sushi chef, Kenji Fujimoto, nicknamed them North Korea's "Prince" and "Princess" due to their upbringing and closeness to the former North Korean leader.

The high-level delegation from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) arrived in South Korea Friday to participate in the opening ceremony of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics.
