Blood spills in Kannur again, YC leader hacked to death

Youth Congress leader allegedly 'hacked to death' by CPI workers

Youth Congress leader and Mattannur block secretary Shuhaib (29) was hacked to death on Monday night.

Congress district leadership said the CPM will have to pay for this attack on their party which is following a peaceful style.

The 30-year-old had sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the hospital, but he succumbed on the way. Police suspect supporters from the ruling CPI (M) behind the attack, reported NDTV.

According to the Congress party, Shoaib was engaged in a tiff in January with the CPI-M unit in the town over student politics. The incident took place when the deceased was being accompanied by two other members of Youth Congress.

"The investigation is on", a police officer said.

Police said three weeks' back, Shuhaib was remanded following a clash between SFI and KSU at Edayannur Higher Secondary School. Notably, in the last few months, Kannur has been largely peaceful. "Since then the CPI (M) had announced publicly that his days are numbered".

Taking a strong stance Leader of Opposition Ramesh Chennithala said the Communist Party India-Marxist has unleashed terror in brutally finishing off its political rivals. Meanwhile, the Congress called for a dawn-to-dusk hartal in the district on Tuesday against yesterday's attack. They are striking at will to eliminate their political rivals in the most inhumane manner. However, if any party worker was involved in the murder, the party would take appropriate action, he said.

CPI (M) has however denied these allegations. "They will have to pay dearly for hampering the peaceful atmosphere when even they are in power", said district congress committee president Satheesan Pacheni.
