Yearly Flu Shot Could Forestall Extreme Instances in Aged

5 dead more than 300 hospitalized in Georgia as flu spreads health officials say

Through Jan. 6, the number of flu cases in Allegheny County totaled 1,842 and Westmoreland County had 658, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

In all, 42 people have died so far this flu season in California, health officials reported, and all were those under the age of 65.

Health officials are hopeful that this year's flu season is peaking - much the way it did in 2014-2015 - and that the number of people sickened will soon start to fall.

"This is a bad flu season", Dr. Dan Jernigan, director of the influenza division of the CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said in a conference call Friday.

"It is still not too late to get your flu vaccination".

"We are seeing widespread flu activity across the state", said David Morgan, public information officer for the Southwest Region of the New Mexico Department of Health.

Nationwide, 20 pediatric deaths have been reported due to the flu this season, but the most recent pediatric deaths were the result of several influenza strains, not just the H3N2 strain. When H3 viruses are predominant, we tend to have a worse flu season with more hospitalizations and more death. The vaccine seems to very effective for the strain that's most prevalent in the state right now, A (H3). Flu symptoms may include fever, cough, sore throat, headache, and/or muscle aches. Flu vaccine can vary in how well it works, but remains the best way to prevent illness and flu complications, including those that can lead to hospitalization.

Eleven people have died from the flu in Travis County this season, according to updated numbers released Thursday. In Manitoba, the report said the flu activity level is high, but the increase of activity slowed in the first week of 2018.

Athens-Limestone Hospital has issued an advisory asking people not to visit the hospital if they are experiencing any flu-like symptoms.

The CDC cautioned Friday that we could still have three months left in flu season. "[For example], B viruses will be showing later in the season, [which is] another reason why to go ahead and get vaccinated now if you have not gotten vaccinated".

Marin Public Health recommends that residents who are not seriously ill stay home, drink fluids, and take medicine for fever.
