White House Switches Up Voicemail To Blame Dems For Shutdown

Neither side budges as day 2 of shutdown continues

The White House has blamed the shutdown on Democrats, calling them "obstructionist losers" and accusing them of being more interested in illegal immigrants than in national security.

"Essential" operations, such as the military, the post office, and federally-run medical centers remain open-although many employees will not receive immediate payment while the government is closed.

It is clear that the adults in the White House have grounded the president and are not letting him go have any fun at all until after the government shutdown is resolved. The US is no stranger to shutdowns - this is the 18th such incident since the first occurred in 1976 during the presidency of Gerald Ford.

"They need to vote to open the government tonight or tomorrow and then we can start talking about those bigger issues", Mulvaney said on CNN.

Under US law federal workers furloughed during government shutdown are not allowed to even volunteer their services to their federal agency.

"Due to this obstruction, the government is shut down", the recording continued.

Discussions on protections for those brought to the USA illegally as children - known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals or DACA recipients - became entangled in budget talks when Democrats said they would not support any form of a spending bill, unless these protections were addressed.

The last government shutdown occurred in 2013 when Republican lawmakers unsuccessfully tried to defund the Affordable Care Act.

"When you only have 51 votes in the Senate then you have to get Democrat support in order to fund the government". "How is that not exactly what is happening today?" He says, "This is pure politics".

He reiterated that the administration won't negotiate with Democrats on immigration or a longer-term spending bill until they vote to reopen the government. Troops will continue to earn their paychecks but won't receive them unless and until a new spending bill that includes backpay is passed.
