Power was restored a little more than two hours later.

"A preliminary assessment indicates that condensation from heavy rainfall caused a flashover on one of the facility's transformers", said a statement from Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, Consumer Technology Association and NV Energy.

After the lights went out, some attendees turned to their smartphones to light the way as they continued to check out new tech products at the exhibitor booths.

The outage was reported at about 11:15 a.m.in the south and central halls of the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Recent reports have revealed that this year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) was shrouded in darkness for more than hour after a power outage. Some meeting rooms in the South Hall also lost power but was restored within minutes.

Many companies were forced to suspend their presentations and barred from conducting demos at the annual tech fair. And the more socially conscious pointed out the hypocrisy of being bent out of shape over a brief blackout at CES when an entire territory of the United States has been without power for months...

Despite being a convention dedicated to incredible (and sometimes very bizarre) upcoming technology, the Consumer Electronics Show is subject to power loss like anything else.

In the meantime, attendees had been evacuated from the affected space, which hosts booths for LG, Samsung and Sony among others. Nevada Energy is "in the process of testing and restoring power". "The blackout is utterly nonsensical".

The official CES Twitter account weighed in on the madness.
