Super Blue Blood Moon - Newschannel 6 Now | Wichita Falls, TX

If it's a clear night the blue moon on January 31 will have people in Vancouver seeing red during the lunar eclipse

It's a "Super Blue Blood Moon" and it will be the first one seen in the United States in over 150 years (March 1866 to be exact). It's simply one part of a double treat for sky watchers on Wednesday, Jan. 31. NASA went as far to provide a chart that details when the lunar event will be best visible from different USA cities and how much those people will be able to see of the "lunar trifecta". We will see the Earth's shadow fall across the moon, but we won't see the full eclipse because the moon will set and the sun will rise.

During a lunar eclipse, the moon often appears reddish due to how the sunlight bends in Earth's atmosphere.

"The super blue moon will pass through Earth's shadow to give viewers in the right location a total lunar eclipse". The best time to view the eclipse will be around 6:15 a.m. "Weather permitting, the West Coast, Alaska and Hawaii will have a spectacular view of totality from start to finish", Gordon Johnston, program executive and lunar blogger at NASA Headquarters said in a statement. The moon is now a waxing gibbous and will be full, super and blue (OK, red) for the eclipse on Wednesday. "Unfortunately, eclipse viewing will be more challenging in the Eastern time zone". Astronomers will tell you however that this one's not a flawless supermoon, as it would have crossed its closest point to the Earth a day before it reaches peak fullness and the eclipse begins. It appears 14% brighter, but that is barely noticed. It's also why lunar eclipses are sometimes called "blood moons". The moon will start slipping behind the Earth at 3:48 a.m. the morning of January 31, and will be completely immersed by 4:51 a.m.

According to The Hindu, a public observation event will take place at the Regional Science Centre and Planetarium in Kozhikode on the night of January 31, between 6:59 PM and 9:38 PM.
