The producers, Bhansali Productions and Viacom18 Motion Pictures, referred to a past Supreme Court order that a film can not be banned on the basis of anticipation of law and order trouble. Whether to screen the film or not will be based on orders received from Mumbai. Ahmedabad chief of Rajput Karni Sena said, "We will not allow the film to be released in Ahmedabad theatres".

On January 18, the Supreme Court set aside the notification passed by the states of Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan and Gujarat against the release of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's directorial Padmaavat.

Maintaining that states were under constitutional obligation to maintain law and order, the apex court had said that this duty also includes providing police protection to persons who are involved in the film, its exhibition and the audience watching it.

This comes even as Chouhan-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in the state has made a decision to appeal against Supreme Court order which paved the way for pan-India release of the film. Without even watching the movie and even after Censor Board gave its approval for release, these states acted tough on this film.

The threat comes after a day of SC clearing Bhansali's conflict-ridden film Padmaavat and suspending the ban orders by the states of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Haryana.

The producers told the court that the movie has undergone all changes that were suggested by the CBFC, including a change in the title of the movie.

"Artistic freedom has been commented upon by the Hon'ble Supreme Court".

The film was earlier scheduled to release on December 1, 2017, but continuous protests and CBFC fiasco forced the makers to shift the date.

Salve also urged the Central government to pass a direction to the states for a better and an effective step towards resolution. The film faced protests from certain organizations on the grounds that it distorts Rajput history.

Padmaavat stars Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor in lead roles.
