Manchester United now leading Liverpool in battle for Nice midfielder Jean Seri

Seri has been a mainstay in the Nice midfield since 2015 and has a £35m buy-out clause

The Nice midfielder has less than 18 months on his contract after his move to Barcelona in the summer fell through leaving him devastated and struggling for form this season. Now, heads have turned towards another player, Nice's Jean Seri, who is desperate to join a big club.

Liverpool are the latest side to join the race to sign midfielder Jean-Michael Seri according to the Daily Mirror.

The article also claims that Chelsea are interested in the Ivory Coast worldwide because of the doubts surrounding Tiemoue Bakayoko following his transfer from Monaco last summer. That said, his talent is undoubted.

Nice are said to be holding out for at least £35 million for Seri, which probably means that most interested clubs will be waiting for the summer transfer window to make a move.

Fellow Premier League sides Chelsea and Manchester United are also in the race to sign the player this month to improve their midfield.

The Reds are also keen on another extensively scouted City target, Brazilian midfielder Fred of Shakhtar Donetsk, so much so that City are considering bringing forward a deal to January for the 24-year-old and loaning him back.

Although City's unbeaten run was recently ended by Liverpool's 4-3 victory at Anfield, their midfield is arguably where everything ticks with the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, David Silva, Ilkay Gundogan and Fernandinho all putting in world class performances this season.

While City will need to sign a replacement for Yaya Toure.

Meanwhile, Jose Mourinho and co are set to lose Michael Carrick to retirement at the end of the season, while Ander Herrera and Nemanja Matic are all approaching their 30's, with Marouane Fellaini having already reached the threshold.
