Katie Couric Breaks Silence on Matt Lauer: 'I Had No Idea'

Katie Couric Slams Today for Matt Lauer's 'Completely Unacceptable' Workplace Harassment

She left in May 2006 to anchor the CBS Evening News.

NBC issued a statement at the end of November announcing Lauer's termination from the network, referring to a "detailed complaint from a colleague about inappropriate sexual behavior".

Lauer was sacked in November over the allegations of multiple women, one of whom claimed he sexually assaulted her while they worked on the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. Multiple sources reportedly spoke of a button Lauer had on his desk that locked his office door from the inside.

Couric seems to have been completely blindsided by the revelations about Lauer. "But it was nice for me to be able to say that that was a joke". "Thanks for your interest".

While speaking with ET on Saturday, she also addressed her 2012 interview on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, when she quipped that the most annoying thing about Lauer was that he "pinches me on the a** a lot". Processing her thoughts in the weeks to come, Couric is now ready to discuss the disturbing fall-out of her former NBC co-anchor. The comment has gotten renewed attention in the wake of the sexual misconduct allegations. "I think there's been a lot of cognitive dissonance for me and a lot of people on the show, and clearly the behavior was unacceptable and shocking for so many of us, and yet we also all knew a side of Matt and many positive attributes". "In fact, a joke I once made on late-night television was just that, because it was completely contrary to our brother-sister relationship", Couric said. She added that "It's still very upsetting", and that she "really admire [s] the way Savannah [Guthrie] and Hoda [Kotb] and the entire Today show staff have handled a very hard situation".

"Some of what is being said about me is untrue or mischaracterized, but there is enough truth in these stories to make me feel embarrassed and ashamed", Lauer said in a statement.

"There are no words to express my sorrow and regret for the pain I have caused others by words and actions", he said, in part. Because I am writing this, I still know the thickness of the disappointment and damage I have gone behind at home and in NBC.
