HTC Vive Gets a Hardware Revision

Lenovo Mirage Solo VR headset Based On Google’s Daydream + VR Camera

"There's a clear need in the VR market for a premium VR experience with high resolution display, integrated audio and the best components available today in a headset", Daniel O'Brien, general manager of HTC's VIVE in the USA market, said in a statement.

"As Apple's ARKit and Google's ARCore made developing apps more streamlined for mobile devices, several companies have made innovations in 6DoF tracking for mobiles, and Vive announcing a higher-resolution headset today".

He continued: "Like many people in the industry, we see VR complementing AR [augmented reality] in terms of being part of an expanded immersive technological revolution; innovations in VR complement AR in terms of development and reach". Its dual-OLED displays have been upgraded to 2880 x 1600, that's almost 80 per cent better than the existing Vive HMD.

With that being said the pixel count increase of 78%, with the PPI (pixels per inch) increasing by 37% to 615.

A wired VR system and improved field-of view (FOV) are expected. Also, the bundle will come with 2.0 versions. It also features a built-in amplifier that offers an intensified sense of presence and richer sound.

The new Vive Pro has bumped up the resolution of the dual OLED displays, up to 1,400 by 1,600 pixels per eye. As a matter of fact, it included a sizing dial for a more stable headset that reduces weight on the front portion of the headset.

It's been nearly two years since consumer VR arrived with the launch of the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. Nonetheless, the price of this device is not known yet. The company partnered with HTC China to distribute the kits as an upgrade for the HTC Vive VR system. It will function with both versions of the headset.

Michael Liu, Founder and CEO at TPCAST said, "We are committed to the VR/AR market, and have developed wireless VR core technology to enable us to deliver a solid wireless VR solution to a Windows MR HMD".

That leaves the US$799 early adopter slot open for a new occupant, and HTC may be indicating its intention with the Vive Pro nomenclature; in November 2016, Sony diversified its PlayStation 4 console line-up by adding an enhanced PlayStation 4 Pro at the console's original price, next to a more affordably priced version of the PS4 launch model.

HTC's Vive is one of the biggest-selling VR headsets in the world due to it being first to market and sold via a deal with Valve Software's popular Steam gaming service.
