Ford unveils Edge ST Performance SUV

The brakes are part of a suite of standard safety features on the new Edge, Ford said, including technology that detects objects and pedestrians and can prevent collisions by automatically braking and steering for the driver.

For example, the Blue Oval has chose to showcase there - in front of the worldwide audience of the North American International Auto Show - the updated Ford Edge midsize SUV, complete with the all-new introduction of the ST version.

The Edge ST will be powered by a 250kW/515Nm 2.7-litre turbocharged V6 engine coupled to a quick-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission, which Ford Performance reckons is the most potent combination in its class. Other upgrades include an ST-tuned sport suspension and an available performance brake package. Ford begins introducing the coveted ST brand to its SUV lineup with the unveiling of the all-new Edge ST today, building on its best-ever SUV sales year in the U.S. "From a performance standpoint, and with its SUV silhouette and versatility, it sets a new standard Edge fans will love to drive".

Styling-wise, you'll recognize the Edge ST thanks to the new front end with a wide mesh grille and aggressive bumper, deep side skirts, unique 21-inch wheels, and muscular rear bumper with dual-exhaust outlets. Ford sold over 142,000 Edges in 2017, with Edge Sports accounting for about 10 percent of that total.

Scott Lindstrom, driver assist technology manager at Ford, highlighted Edge features and said drivers appreciate receiving danger alerts that avert potential collisions, evasive steering support, adaptive cruise control, lane centering technology as well as parallel parking assist.

In the US Ford has also improved the standard kit list on the Edge, but it's not yet know if that will be reflected on United Kingdom models.

SYNC with AppLink™, an enhanced voice-recognition communications and entertainment system, is also standard.

Following CEO Jim Hackett's mantra - smart vehicles for a smart world - the 2019 Edge is outfitted with a full suite of driver-assist features. You've got a new 8-speed automatic sending power to the AWD. For 2019 the Edge gains a redesigned centre console with a rotary gear-shift dial a-la Jaguar Land Rover, FordPass Connect as standard with a WiFi hotspot, the availability of wireless phone charging, and the availability of a new 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen Play premium audio system.

With a wider grille and freshened fascia that create an athletic, modern appearance, the new Edge maintains the reputation for sophistication it's carried for more than a decade.

Meanwhile, the standard Ford Edge range sees a facelift for the 2019 model year, bringing an new front and rear treatments, upgraded LED lighting all-round, new colour choices and revised alloy wheel designs.
