Ford Mustang Bullitt to be unveiled at Detroit Auto Show 2018

Externally, Ford has applied as many cues as possible from the original 1968 hero auto, including the black-painted 19-inch wheels (dubbed "torque thrust"), chrome accents around the glass, red brake calipers and black front grille.

Molly McQueen actually had to learn how to drive a stick for her scenes in a video Ford showed during its news conference Sunday evening.

The Bullitt benefits from all the technology upgrades fitted to the 2018 Mustang, including active safety equipment and the customisable 12-inch digital LCD instrument screen, though this special edition displays a Bullitt welcome screen with an image of the vehicle on start-up rather than the pony logo of the standard auto. The Bullitt is only available with a six-speed manual transmission - with the gear knob shaped like a white cue ball as a nod to the original. As with previous Bullitts, the new version gets a bump in performance from the GT. Ford says to expect "at least" 475-horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque.

Other features include an active performance exhaust with black tips, an Open Air Induction System, 87mm throttle bodies and an intake manifold from the Shelby GT350.

"This new Bullitt is, as Steve McQueen was, effortlessly cool", said Darrell Behmer, Mustang chief designer.

In the film, Molly races a new Mustang Bullitt through a parking structure battling a Dodge Charger for the final free space. "It doesn't need to scream about anything - it's just cool".

There are only two color options for the Bullitt, Dark Highland Green or Shadow Black, and the rest of the options list is pretty short too.

More powerful than a regular Mustang GT, the special edition is de-badged just like the movie vehicle. The circular faux gas cap has a Bullitt logo. The steering wheel is heated leather, and the seats are leather-trimmed with green accent stitching that's also found on the dashboard, center console, and door panels. The film's almost 10-minute-long sequence followed McQueen chasing down two hitmen in his Mustang through the streets of San Francisco. That jumper vehicle resurfaced in Baja, California, in early 2017, but the other was lost to history.

Ford is preparing to launch a special edition version of the Mustang Bullitt GT at the Detroit Motor Show 2018, reports suggest. "I'm just completely buzzing to join with Ford and the new Bullitt and show this auto to the world on one of the biggest stages there is".
