Without reveling her age, Richardson says it's her exercise and diet that has kept her healthy.

Symptoms of the flu vary but can include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue.

Los Angeles County Department of Public Health says 36 people have died with reported influenza-like symptoms this season, up from the 13 deaths reported the same time previous year. In the first week of 2018 alone, 425 new cases were reported from 38 counties. For the entire 2016-17 flu season, ME had 71 flu-related deaths. Getting a vaccine can also reduce the length of the flu if you do get sick. The legislation is now widespread in the most nation other than Hawaii.

"We have not seen an increase in flu activity this early in the winter in the past five years", said Department of Health Secretary Lynn Gallagher in the NMDOH's January 4 report. Even so, it could go on for another 13 weeks.

While hospitals sometimes restrict visitors during influenza outbreaks, MDMH hasn't needed to do that this year.

"Our hospital rates and our ICU rates, they're up there, but they're always in the expected and accepted ranges", said Rusk.
