Ex-Sena corporator killing: Cops widen dragnet; motive unclear

Apart from Samata Nagar police, Crime Branch is conducting a parallel probe into the incident.

Police arrived at the scene of the crime and collected samples for forensic examination, and are also examining whether there were any CCTVs near the scene of the crime. The killing took place near Sawant's residence in Thakur Complex while he was returning home with his friend Vinod Sonawane. He had entered the cable television business a couple of years ago.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

According to the police the assailants came in a auto and attacked Deepak while he was on the way to his workplace and attacked him with sharp weapons. Vinay Rathod, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Zone 12, said that the body of the former corporator has been sent to the Shatabdi Hospital for postmortem. "He died of excessive blood loss".

Sawant is survived by his wife, son and two daughters. One of his daughters was to get married on February 5.

As per preliminary investigation, the police suspect that one of the accused Jagdish Pawar, who previously had a fallout with Sawant over a financial dispute, is the main killer.

The two men arrested for their alleged involvement in the murder case of ex-Shiv Sena corporator Ashok Sawant had been planning the murder for more than 45 days, said the police. "We have registered an FIR against unknown people under IPC Sections 302 and 34 for murder at Samata Nagar police station".
