Moore ended up losing to former U.S. Attorney Doug Jones, who was sworn in as senator Wednesday.

The arrival of Smith and Jones on Capitol Hill highlighted the extent to which the #MeToo movement has swept over Washington.

Despite being criticized by Republicans, including Trump, Jones has promised to try to work across party lines on issues important to Alabama and the country.

At a spirited rally held on December 11, the night before failed Alabama GOP Senate candidate Roy Moore rode a long-suffering horse to the polls, his wife Kayla royally botched an attempt to dispel the notion that her alleged child molester husband is also a bigot.

Time will tell exactly how Jones will balance representing a ruby-red state while maintaining Democratic values, including his pro-abortion rights stance.

Jones is the first Alabama Democrat elected to the Senate in a quarter-century. Smith, who was Minnesota's lieutenant governor, was appointed to fill the seat of Democratic Sen. "On the issues where McConnell is having a harder time holding his caucus together, Senator Jones is going to make a very positive difference".

Biden will speak afterward to a gathering of Jones' friends and family, a person familiar with his plans said.

"Senator Doug Jones' swearing in today was a historic landmark for Alabama voters", said Sewell on Wednesday. Smith's predecessor, Franken, resigned under pressure from fellow Democrats after allegations emerged that he had touched women inappropriately.

"Infrastructure is the flawless opportunity for both the parties to try to show to the American public that you can work together", Mr. Jones said.

Ms. Smith keeps a seat in Democrats' hands, while Mr. Jones won a longtime GOP seat, cutting Republicans' majority by one.

Jones also has announced that he hired Birmingham native Dana Gresham as the Senate Democrats' only black chief of staff. Jay Rockefeller (Democrat of West Virginia), will be legislative director.
