Where CES is mostly focused on far-out concepts without steering wheels, the Detroit Auto Show remains rooted in the here-and-now.

Charlie Chesboro with says that means spending more on marketing and incentives. But over the last few years, something else has been catching people's eyes at the auto show.

Hackett says passion for Ford is at an all-time high. That means a show floor where, for the most part, SUVs, trucks and perhaps the occasional hybrid usurp the self-driving concepts and artificially-intelligent prototypes of CES.

"I'm thinking about over the next four to five years what are the things we've got to get done", he says.

One of the most iconic movie cars ever made has been given a modern twist in Detroit, with Ford's unveiling of a special edition Mustang inspired by the version driven by Steve McQueen in the 1968 film Bullitt.

Stephanie Brinley, a senior analyst with IHS, says as long as consumer confidence remains strong - and it was at a 17-year high in November - there will be a niche market for rugged trucks like the Ranger.

At CES this year, Ford announced a series of projects, such as a "transportation mobility cloud" that links communication from a city's public transit systems, and Mercedes-Benz' Smart Vision EQ, a self-driving smart vehicle prototype. The Ranger likely will use a turbocharged, 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine as its base choice, with turbocharged V-6 options for some premium versions. The new engine will spark a battle within the raging full-size truck war as GM announced a diesel for its 2019 Silverado and FCA confirmed it plans to put a diesel in the redesigned Ram 1500. It disappeared as the vehicle companies moved more and more toward oversized trucks, leaving a big fan base pining for the return of the Ranger ever since.

The Mercedes-AMG badge is synonymous with V8-powered sedans that hit top speeds of 155mph, alongside thunderous exhaust notes.

One in every seven vehicles sold previous year was a full-size pickup. "You just feel like a million bucks". The diesel trucks will arrive in US dealeships in spring 2018. Although little has changed on the outside since the 1979 original, the latest G-Class' interior takes a giant leap forward thanks to a dashboard consisting of two, 12.3-inch displays, controlled by a rotary dial and laptop-style touchpad. "It is going to prove the promise that we are talking about", Hackett said.
