Bayern signs Germany midfielder Goretzka from rival Schalke

Leon Goretzka

Schalke 04 confirmed Friday that Germany midfielder Leon Goretzka will join Bayern Munich at the end of this season on a free transfer, with the Bundesliga leaders beating Liverpool to his signature.

"Leon Goretzka informed us earlier this week that he wishes to leave the club and join Bayern", Heidel said.

Juventus are keen on signing Liverpool's Emre Can and the Italian champions' director general Giuseppe Marotta has revealed the club will do "all they can" in securing the midfielder's services.

Bayern Munich chairman Karl Heinz-Rummenigge recently hinted that that an agreement with the midfielder is in the advanced stages. We noted it with regret.

"We are losing a very, very good player", Heidel said.

Juventus are now the front runners for the German midfielder, who can sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club.

"All of the club, including (club president Clemens) Tonnies, is fighting to keep him here".

It is a big blow for Schalke that he has opted to depart, especially as they will receive no fee for him. But he wanted time regardless to see our sporting progress. "Obviously, we have to respect what the player wants". But we have to accept this decision. It's out of the question that Leon's an important puzzle piece. Our fans have always supported our team and Leon will be part of it in the second half of the season.

"Leon is a professional and he will continue to give everything for Schalke".

The right-footed Goretzka joined Schalke from VfL Bochum in 2013 and has scored 19 goals in 130 games for the Royal Blues.
