Army General leading Nigeria's war against Boko Haram removed

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen Tukur Buratai had in August issued a 40-day ultimatum to the Operation Lafiya Dole Theatre Command to capture Shekau, but he failed to do so when the deadline expired.

Following to resurgence of Boko Haram attacks in the North-east, Major General Attahiru Ibrahim has been removed from his position as the Theatre Commander of the Lafiya Dole operation.

Attahiru, who took over from Major general Leo Irabor, was at different times, Director of Administration, Defence Headquarters and General Officer Commanding, GOC, 82 Division, Enugu.

Borno State Governor Ibrahim Shettima said the government's long-term plan is to corral civilians in fortified garrison towns - effectively ceding the countryside to Boko Haram.

Boko Haram attacks appear to have increased since Mr. Ibrahim assumed duties with scores of suicide bombings, mostly by teenage girls, occurring between May and December. About 12 soldiers who escorted the academics were reportedly killed. -Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru, has been replaced by Maj.

Series of attacks were also carried out in Adamawa State.

Mr. Ibrahim has now been replaced by Rogers Nicholas, also a major general.

Earlier, he served as the Commander of the Special Security Task Force (STF) in Jos as well as Chief of Civil Military Affairs at Army headquarters.

Military sources disclosed that prior to his redeployment, the new Theatre Commander, the Chief of Logistics at Army Headquarters, in Abuja.
