Sony Has Sold Over 70.6 Million PS4s Worldwide

Nintendo Switch

While the Oculus and Vive are standalone systems that require a high-end PC, the PlayStation VR unit catered to its existing fan base because it only required a PS4 to run the system. Sony does not break out how numerous consoles are PS4 Pro.

As of December 3, the console of PlayStation 4 has accumulated 70.6 million sales worldwide, bringing together sales of the PS4 Standard and the PS4 Pro.

Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) today announced new sales milestones for PlayStation®4 (PS4™) computer entertainment system, PlayStation®VR (PS VR) virtual reality system, and PS4 and PS VR games. 617.8 million PS4 games have been sold through retail and digital downloads, while 12.2 million PSVR games have been sold through the same channels. "I can not thank our fans and partners enough. We will continue to work closely with partners to maintain this momentum and remain steadfast in making PS4 the best place to play", House said.

To say that the Switch is selling incredibly well worldwide would be a massive understatement, but in Japan it is particularly dominant, regularly topping both the hardware and software charts. While the console has hit a solid stride, its first year and a half were extremely sluggish due to the lack of games dedicated to the Japanese market, following by a large cross-generation period in which games released also on PS3 reduced the attractiveness of the new console. The PS4 has managed to gain a huge sales lead over it's competitors, and continues to sell well four years after launch. The $100 Black Friday discount helped sales of the PSVR as well.

Going into 2018, Sony will continue to build on it's 2017 momentum with a slew of exclusive titles.
