Raiders looking to reunite with Jon Gruden

The offer, according to Mortensen, could include ownership stake and a backloaded contract that would allow Gruden to make the bulk of his money when the team moves to Las Vegas in order to avoid state tax.

Jack Del Rio, who signed a contract extension last summer, is in trouble as the Raiders (6-9) have been the biggest disappointment in the AFC this season. According to a source, Davis has always had "an affinity" for Gruden and has offered Gruden part ownership of the team in the past. The NFL's finance committee also would have to vet Gruden, but there is no reason to think it would not approve the deal.

Should Gruden accept the offer, the Raiders will fire Del Rio.

There have been rumors of Gruden returning to the sideline in the past.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, Gruden has reached out to potential assistant coaches in recent weeks.

Gruden will have not been in the professional coaching ranks in almost a full decade by the time next season rolls around.

And Gruden still has an affinity for coaching.

"I dont want to sit here and speculate", Gruden told the network he works for. I cant say I havent taken any phone calls. Gruden was in the booth for his final Monday Night Football game of the season last week in Philadelphia, when the Eagles hosted Davis' Raiders.

For all of Gruden's prestige as an analyst and Super Bowl-winning head coach, it might be surprising to recall that he hasn't coached in the National Football League in a decade, that he really only had two especially good seasons in Tampa Bay, and that one of those seasons was spent coaching a team that had been raised up from the mud by his predecessor, Tony Dungy. Yeah, sometimes owners. Guys want to bounce ideas off me.

Gruden declined to specifically comment about the Raiders. Many sources believe the Raiders are preparing to make an offer so enticing that it will be hard for Gruden to turn it down.

Gruden wasn't much more fortunate in his first season (1998) at the controls of Oakland, as he was handed a roster that had quarterbacks Donald Hollas, Wade Wilson and the perennially underachieving mistake waiting to happen Jeff George to choose from. "I'm here to help people".
