Rahul Gandhi takes helm of India's Congress party

"There is no makeover, the truth of Rahul Gandhi was being distorted by BJP workers".

After a full spirited campaign for Congress in Gujarat, Rahul Gandhi exuded confidence of a victory for the party in the state.

Rahul listed issues - corruption charges against Amit Shah's son Jay Shah, plight of farmers, atrocities on Dalits, etc, - and wondered why the PM never spoke a word about them.

Congress sources said that the 47-year-old Rahul would take over as party president on Saturday but his mother Sonia is expected to continue to lead the party in Parliament. "There is kind of hollowness in the BJP", he said adding that under the BJP rule people of Gujarat witnessed one-sided development of 5-10 industrialists, and others didn't get anything.

Claiming that the BJP had a lacklustre campaign, Rahul said: "We had thought that the BJP will defend itself, give Gujarat a vision of its own but it did not".

"After first round we are confident that we are winning the polls in Gujarat..."

Meanwhile, addressing a rally in northern Gujarat yesterday for the final phase of assembly elections, PM Modi targeted Congress' President-elect Rahul Gandhi, saying he was born with a "golden spoon" and has not seen poverty.

For Congress President-elect Rahul Gandhi the day began with a visit to Jagannath Temple. "Is Kedarnath in Gujarat?" he asked. They aren't even contesting the second phase of the elections, knowing the strength of the BJP.

"Present Government's irrational economic policies have damaged Gujarat. People of Gujarat will give a fitting reply to the negativity and lies of the Opposition".

Making an emotional appeal, the Prime Minister said, "The lies that our worthy opponents have spread, about Gujarat, Gujarat's growth and about me personally is something I had never imagined. I will help in its formulation, but Gujarat's vision will be based on the wishes of people". When Mani Shanker Aiyar used such language, I made a decision to take action against him. But what Modiji has said about former prime minister Manmohan Singh is not acceptable.
