Islamic terror plot to kill British prime minister foiled, report claims

UK PM Theresa May defends response to Hurricane Irma

"It is in essence an extreme Islamist suicide plot against Downing Street".

"This is something which has been pursued over several weeks at least by Scotland Yard, MI5 and West Midlands Police", the British TV station said.

The report, commissioned by Home Secretary Amber Rudd, looked into the analysis of intelligence by MI5 and counterterrorism police prior to the attacks on Westminster Bridge, London Bridge, the Manchester Arena and Finsbury Park mosque.

It identified them as Naa'imur Zakariyah Rahman, 20, of north London, and Mohammed Aqib Imran, 21, of south-east Birmingham.

"It came to a head last week with the arrest of two men, by armed police, who were charged with preparing acts of terrorism". He informed the Cabinet that a total of nine terrorists attacks were foiled by the security agencies in previous year.

Suicide bomber Salman Abedi detonated an explosive at an Ariana Grande concert that killed 22 people on May 22. An official report into the attack released on Tuesday found opportunities to thwart it had been missed. MI5 and police believe the plot would have started with an attack using an improvised bomb at the gates of Downing Street.

The nearest the IRA got to killing a British prime minister was in 1984 when they targeted the hotel Margaret Thatcher and top officials were staying in for that year's annual Conservative party conference in Brighton on Britain's south coast.
