House Intelligence committee questions Donald Trump Jr. on Russian Federation contacts

A separate 2016 meeting with Alexander Torshin, a senior Russian politician and central banker close to President Vladimir Putin, has added to the scrutiny of President Trump's eldest son.

But Schiff questioned whether that was a valid reason to not tell Congress about the conversations.

Trump Jr. claimed client-attorney privilege to justify his refusal to divulge what he and his father talked about, and top Democrat on the committee, Adam Schiff, was having none of it.

Donald Trump Jr. told House investigators on Wednesday that he did not speak directly with his father about how to respond after news reports broke about Junior's June 2016 Trump Tower sitdown with a shady Russian lawyer. Veselnitskaya says Trump pressed her for written evidence of malfeasance by Clinton during the meeting. He said President Donald Trump, according to the sources, was debating between a longer and a shorter statement while President Trump and Hicks were aboard Air Force One.

Trump Jr. had met with investigators for the Senate Judiciary Committee in September, but that session took place before prosecutors working for special counsel Robert Mueller III filed criminal charges against former Trump advisers. And whatever was said between father and son after emails concerning the meeting became public would certainly be relevant to understanding the role the president might have played in orchestrating the response to the damaging reports about Trump Jr.'s effort to obtain Clinton "dirt".

"In my view, there is no attorney client privilege that protects a discussion between a father and son", Schiff said.

Donald Trump Jr. was grilled behind closed doors in Congress Wednesday about his contacts with Russian Federation as pressure builds on his father over alleged collusion with Moscow in last year's election. In between he placed or received a call to another person whose number was blocked.

Last month, Trump Jr. shared messages he exchanged with WikiLeaks during the 2016 campaign. "My takeaway is he has a very serious case of amnesia", Speier said.

Why did you agree to take the meeting?

The fact that Trump knew anything at all about the private contact suggests that the now-president was not totally out of the loop with respect to his campaign's coordination with Russian Federation, as he has repeatedly claimed since taking office. But they may not get the chance, as "it's up to the Republicans whether or not to call him back", according to Swalwell. "A lot of questions were asked and answered, and from my perspective all of our questions were answered", said Representative Mike Conaway, the Republican leading the committee's Russian Federation investigation.

Rep. Mike Conaway, R-Texas, one of the Republicans leading the probe, said the interview was "professional" and described Trump Jr.as "cooperative at all times".
