Beyoncé Presents Colin Kaepernick With SI Muhammad Ali Legacy Award

Kaepernick wins Sports Illustrated Muhammad Ali Legacy Award

Colin Kaepernick received Sports Illustrated's Muhammad Ali Legacy Award from Beyonce on Tuesday night and vowed to continue his protest movement, "with or without the NFL's platform".

"Colin took action with no fear of effect or repercussion, only hope to change the world for the better; to change perception; to change the way we treat each other, especially people of color", Beyoncé said as she thanked Kaepernick for his selflessness and conviction.

Kaepernick helped spark a national debate about race in the US past year when he sat, then knelt, during the national anthem at 49ers games to protest police brutality. "So let's be very clear", Beyonce said.

After taking to the stage amid rousing ovation, Kaepernick told the audience: "I accept this award, knowing that the legacy of Muhammad Ali is that of a champion of the people". To change perception, to change the way we treat each other, especially people of color.

"The footprints he [Ali] leaves are large", Kaepernick said.

"When Kaepernick took a knee during the national anthem to protest police brutality, no one could have predicted how that one action inspired a national conversation about race", Noah said.

After the first time he sat out during the national anthem, Kaepernick explained at a press conference: "I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people, and people of colour".

"With or without the NFL's platform, I will continue to work for the people because my platform is the people", he said.

The quarterback parted ways with the San Francisco 49ers this year, and was not signed to another team. Other NFL players joined him in the protests, which have continued this season even as Kaepernick remains unsigned.

I say this as a person who receives credit for using my platform to protest systemic oppression, racialized injustice and and the dire consequences of anti-blackness in America.

Kaepernick skipped the red carpet prior to the show and was not available for questions.
