West Hawaii celebrates tribute to traditional consumerism — Small Business Saturday

After the turkey, stuffing and pie is all eaten on Thanksgiving, many people's thoughts will likely turn toward holiday shopping and Black Friday sales.

The annual national Small Business Saturday campaign, sponsored by American Express, encourages consumers to patronize small, local businesses during the holiday shopping season.

And don't forget to stop for a bite to eat at any locally owned and operated restaurant, coffeehouse, café or diner. When residents don't support local businesses that business can't afford to stay open and it is often hard to replace it, because when future storeowners look to open a business in Sterling the first thing they look at is how successful similar or previous businesses are. The ripple effect may take it further than you know. It's been a part of advertising slogans and product pitches for years. "I urge both residents and visitors to make every attempt to support West Haven's small businesses on November 25". Kennedy said around 85 percent of businesses in the state are sole proprietors.

The last day of this year's drawing ends on Small Business Saturday, giving participants an opportunity to shop at local businesses to enter for a chance to win the grand prize: a four seated Honda Pioneer UTV, with an accompanying utility trailer from Ott's Farm Equipment & Fallon Welding. In 2016, 112 million people came out to shop on Small Business Saturday.

SBS won't go unrecognized on the leeward side this year, however.

All small businesses are invited to set up a booth in the center's expansive parking lot for as long as suits their needs. There, they can introduce themselves to the community in whatever way they see fit.

That event runs from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. So why should a person embrace the shop small mentality? Our local hashtag for the offers available this year is #ShopLebanonTN. At her Kailua-Kona locations this Saturday, a local baker will supply cupcakes and shoppers will be offered juice or mimosas, along with healthy discounts.

"I am once again proud to acknowledge the many quality and vital small businesses in every corner of our city and the invaluable contributions they make to our economy and the life of our community", said O'Brien, a former downtown merchant. "In that way, they're not only supporting a local store, but supporting 50 local designers, as well".

Over in Buda, most of the small business on Main Street, FM 967 and FM 1626 will be participating in the shopping holiday.

Vogelgesang echoed that sentiment, saying there's more to SBS and the retail habits it's promoting than just driving traffic. "Otherwise, all the towns would just have big box stores", she said.

In fact, according to the American Independent Business Alliance, 48 percent of the money spent on purchases at a local independent businesses is re-circulated locally, but less than 14 percent of purchases at chain stores stay within the community.
