Two Hizbul militants killed in encounter after attack on police in Kashmir's Kupwara

Two militants were killed in an encounter with troops in Zachaldara, Handwara in border district of Kupwara on Monday. "The attack was repulsed and both the militants were killed", said the police.

The gun battle ensued after the terrorists opened fire on a joint team of police, Army and the Central Reserve Police Force at Galganzer village, prompting the forces to retaliate.

"We have started investigation to ascertain the identity of the two militants", he added.

The militants targeted a police checkpoint after dusk, according to the police control room in Handwara.

He said the search operation continued for over three hours.

Additional security forces were rushed to cordon the area to foil any attempt by militants to escape.

Police had blamed Mehmood Bhai and his men for killing of off duty BSF constable Rameez Ahmad Parray at his home in Hajin area in September this year. In a separate case in south Kashmir's Shopian district, militants assaulted a Congress worker. They caution him against acting as an "informer" of police and working for mainstream parties.
