Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty is free now!

StarCraft 2 Is Now Free-to-play

You'll be able to play others free of charge up to level five.

As Blizzard announced back on November 5, the entire Wings of Liberty campaign is available in the just-unleashed free-to-play version (v4.0) of StarCraft II, and the unranked multiplayer ladder is also freely accessible from the get-go.

If you're new to the game, ensure you have a BattleTag, which is basically your in-game username.

Aside from the excellent Wings of Liberty campaign, the other big thing here is free access to the ranked multiplayer ladder. So yep, despite going free-to-play, Starcraft II won't feature any extra currencies or microtransactions.

Finally, if you already own Wings of Liberty, you can get a free digital copy of the expansion pack Heart of the Swarm - though have only until December 8 to obtain that.

All you have to do to unlock it permanently is earn 10 First Wins of the Day in Unranked or Versus A.I. play-our way to preserve the quality and integrity of the ranked experience.

For a limited time, those that had previously purchased "Wings of Liberty" are eligible to get a free copy of the game's second expansion, "Heart of the Swarm", which will appear in players' Battle.net client as a gift that they then can redeem for the full expansion through Blizzard's online store. If you already have one, great.

If you've never played StarCraft II, you really need to check this out, unless you truly detest strategy games.

On the Account Management page, select StarCraft II, pick the right OS, and wait for the installer to work its magic. If you own all of the content about SCII, don't worry, you will be getting some free skins and portraits. Yay!

Don't be surprised if you have a little difficulty getting connected at first, or if the software produces a few odd error messages - both of which happened to me along the way.
