Secretary Of State Rex Tillerson Recognizes Transgender Day Of Remembrance

A survey report of Chinese transgender population is released on Nov. 20 2017 in Beijing

"On Transgender Day of Remembrance, the United States honors the memory of the many transgender individuals who have lost their lives to acts of violence", read a statement posted on the State Department website.

Today marks the Transgender Day of Remembrance, when the trans community and friends gather together to mourn the men, women and non binary people murdered every year due to their gender identity.

Wichita Falls Metropolitan Community Church is holding a special service Monday evening to remember all transgender men and women who have lost their lives.

In the past decade, at least one person a month has been killed because of transphobic violence. He sees today as a day of reflection.

Both organizations contend that the annual tally of 25 homicides may very well be an incomplete total bearing in mind scant police records and local news reports that misidentify transgender victims by not respecting their chosen gender.

On this day people have taken to social media to raise awareness about the day and remind others of its importance. "We have to be who we truly are, and we do it despite the violence that might be perpetrated against us". Last year, the South Dakota Legislature passed a bill requiring students to use the restrooms and locker rooms that matched their sex at birth.

Governor Dennis Daugarard vetoed the bill passed by the legislature past year, saying the measure was "a solution in search of a problem".

"But Bruce says these bills, whether they pass or not, have a damaging effect on the transgender community".

"I would invite them and say please come and learn about the people you are saying you don't like because they're different".
