The EAS draws leaders from 18 countries, including 10 ASEAN member states and six dialogue partners - China, Japan, South Korea, India, Australia and New Zealand as well as the United States and Russian Federation as new comers.

India has been supporting freedom of navigation and access to resources in the SCS in accordance with principles of worldwide law, including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

At the event, the leaders agreed to adopt declarations on anti-money laundering and countering financing for terrorism, preventing the spread of terrorism and chemical weapons, and cooperating to reduce poverty.

The PM welcomed ASEAN's and China's adoption of a framework for the COC in August and stressed the need to promote negotiations for a feasible, legally-binding COC in accordance with global law, including the UNCLOS, to maintain peace and stability in the East Sea in the long run.

"We would definitely be including this as an important component, the Ramayan linkage and the celebration of this common heritage", Secretary, East, in the External Affairs Ministry Preeti Saran said. "And he has been working at it very, very successfully indeed", the U.S. president added. He said India is also holding a commemorative summit with ASEAN on January 25 next year.

India's investment in ASEAN during the same period has been more than Dollars 40 billion. India has asked for the services agreement to be inked as a quid pro quo.

Investment from ASEAN to India has been over $70 billion in the last 17 years accounting for more than 17 percent of India's foreign direct investment.

"The 1.25 billion people of India are keen to welcome the ASEAN Leaders as our Chief Guests at India's 69th Republic Day Celebrations", he said.

Duterte said that during the summit, leaders of the 10-nation regional bloc and their dialogue partners, including China and the United States, vowed to work together to combat terror groups.

The ties between India and ASEAN have been on an upswing.

The forum provides an opportunity for the leaders to exchange views and assess worldwide issues of concern, including traditional and non-traditional security threats, primarily terrorism, maritime cooperation and security and non-proliferation.

Participating leaders pledged to continue strengthening collaboration in politics, economy, finance, socio-culture, people-to-people exchanges, business connectivity, and towards building the East Asia Community.

The Indian prime minister arrived in the Philippine capital on Sunday for a three-day visit.

Modi also held a bilateral meeting with Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei focus.
