Next SPIDER-MAN Spin-off Movie Will Be MORBIUS, THE LIVING VAMPIRE

'Spider-Man' Spinoff: Morbius the Living Vampire Movie in the Works With 'Power Rangers' Writers

Speaking of Google, a quick cursory search reveals Morbius to be Dr. Michael Morbius - a scientist who suffers from a rare blood disease and attempts to cure himself to disastrous results (he becomes a vampire). In fact, Morbius nearly made his big-screen debut before Spider-Man. But instead of curing himself of his affliction, he turned himself into a vampire-like creature who has a thirst for blood, along with super-strength, fangs, and pale white skin.

The character has fought Spider-Man on several occasions and also became a slightly heroic character. However, Morbius would eventually shine as a hero of sorts, with the 1992 debut of his own series Morbius the Living Vampire. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio recently ordered a movie based on Morbius the Living Vampire from the writers of the recent Power Rangers reboot.

What route, exactly, Sony is going to go with the character is not yet known as they've declined to comment on the news. Sharpless and Sazama themselves dabbled in the supernatural genre, penning Universal's Dracula Untold, another disappointing building block for a troubled cinematic universe.

Which is why it's hard to get excited about a Morbius movie, which comes completely out of left field. He first manifested as a villain, tangling with Spider-Man during the famous storyline in which the Wall-Crawler grew four extra arms after a failed experiment to remove his spider powers. Sony has tried their hand at a standalone Spider-Man franchise twice over the last two decades - first with Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man trilogy, then again with Marc Webb and Andrew Garfield's The Amazing Spider-Man.

Morbius joins Venom and Silver & Sable, the Black Cat and Silver Sable-centric spin-off, in Sony's cabal of increasingly unusual superhero spin-offs.

Sony is looking to expand its Spider-Man shared universe with a film centered on Morbius, the Living Vampire. As the recent implosion of the Dark Universe demonstrated, fans won't line up to see a film just because it connects with other movies.
