Militants, trooper killed in encounter

Security forces step up winter offensive against militants in Kashmir

An Army jawan and a militant were today killed in an encounter in Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir even as security forces were engaged in a counter insurgency operation in Pulwama district.

Officials said that troops of Rashtriya Rifles along with Special Operation Group were patrolling Zachaldara area when militants fired on the forces. The security forces gunned down three terrorists in a fierce retaliation.

Security forces had surrounded Nowbug village after receiving information about the presence of militants there.

"The slain militant has been identified as Muzamil Ahmad of Yaripora village of Kulgam district".

Authorities suspended Internet services in south Kashmir areas and ordered the suspension of train service for the day after the gunfight started. While searches were intensified towards the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon security forces triggering an encounter.

Following the militant killings, massive protests rocked their hometowns at Palhalan and Sopore. The gunfight between the two sides takes place intermittently across the region.
