Applications open for Christmas assistance from the Salvation Army of Metro Detroit

The Lima Salvation Army needs volunteers

The Salvation Army in New Jersey's Third Annual Kettle Kick-Off promises to be the biggest and best to date.

The 2017 Red Kettle campaign goal is $84,000. Additionally, The Salvation Army served over one million hot meals statewide past year. "We raised $16,000 past year".

With the holidays just around the corner, Christmas lights are going up, trees are getting decorated and those unmistakable red kettles are appearing around the city. The program helps provide underprivileged children and seniors with gifts for Christmas.

They are looking for groups, families and individuals who would give a few hours of their time to ring the bells at various locations around the Lima area. "And it is wonderful that we as a community come together to support our family, friends and those that we know", said Amirfar. "When you put a person there, it does make a difference".

Amirfar shared with the crowd that the Turlock Police Department decreased crimes by eight percent last year, and an additional five percent so far this year. The Marquette County office is now looking to hire part time bell ringers, or - volunteer bell ringers are also needed.

As of November 23, kettles will be set up Foodland, Sobeys and Harbax Home Hardware in Glace Bay and beginning December 1, kettles will also be placed at Atlantic Superstore, the Glace Bay liquor store and the Sterling Mall. Bell ringers will accompany the kettles asking for donations every day of the week, except Sunday, through December 24.
