At least fourteen tourists, including six women and two children, were killed and nine others missing as a boat capsized in Krishna river near this city in Andhra Pradesh's Krishna district on Sunday, officials said.

Survivors said they boarded the private boat as the boats of the Tourism Department were not available. "Many of the tourists got trapped under the overturned boat and died of suffocation", said one of them.

According to initial reports, the boat belonging to Simple Water Sports, a private agency, was ferrying tourists from Bhavani Island - a popular tourist spot - to Pavitra Sangamam, where the Godavari joins the Krishna on the outskirts of Vijayawada.

The passengers were travelling to Pavitra Sangamam to see a daily ritual when the boat lost its balance.

Locals and rescue workers rescued 15 people.

The accident took place at around 5.45 pm.

The District Collector said a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder was booked against the company operating the boat.

However, a few passengers wearing life jackets managed to swim ashore with the help of trained swimmers and local fishermen. Bad light is understood to have hampered the rescue operations.

The personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are leading the search and rescue operation.
