Officials said the Miami-Dade Police Department is investigating the officer-involved shooting, while the Miami Beach Police Department is investigating the crashes.

The incident unfolded Sunday night as people dined in sidewalk cafes.

Police Chief Daniel Oates said a woman driving a BMW was speeding when she ran through a red light and crashed into another vehicle shortly after 6 p.m. near 12th Street and Collins Avenue, in the heart of Miami Beach's glitzy tourist district. An officer who was nearby on foot because he was part of additional patrols for the weekend tried to get her to stop, but she accelerated and hit him, throwing him off his feet, Oates said.

She was confronted by police officers near Washington and 12th who surrounded her vehicle.

Oates said "one or more rounds" hit the woman, who later died at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

The officer sustained head injuries but is in stable condition.

After people surrounded her auto, pleading with her to get out, the woman reportedly hit the gas and ran over a police officer. The officer who was struck suffered lacerations to the body and loss of consciousness, according to Miami Beach Fire. "At some point, the driver made a decision to speed away and she continued west on 12th Street". Police confirmed a man was in the vehicle with the woman.

Officials urged pedestrians and drivers to avoid the area. "I heard like shots, like four or five shots, like 'pow, pow, pow, pow!' And then the auto lost control", Garcia added. Visitors were being told it could be hours before they could get to their cars parked on the street.

"All of the sudden she like starts the auto and runs over the policeman", a witness said.

The vehicle came to a halt on 12th Street near Washington Avenue and also struck an SUV.
