Wenger blasts Merson after recent comments

Harry Redknapp and Arsene Wenger both have managed Paul Merson

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger hits back at Paul Merson's claims that Harry Redknapp is a better tactician than him, labelling the comments "a joke" and "a farce".

Merson said of Redknapp: "People say he's a wheeler dealer and it's so disrespectful".

"We [Portsmouth] were 33/1 rank outsiders to win the league that year", Merson told host James Corden.

"We won our first game of the season at home and I thought we'd be alright and then went to Crystal Palace".

And Merson pointed to one particular match at Portsmouth as evidence of Redknapp's understated tactical genius.

"That's when I knew he was a great manager".

Redknapp's most notable piece of silverware in a long and respected career in English football is the 2008 FA Cup triumph with Portsmouth.

Tottenham never won a trophy under Redknapp, but beat Inter Milan in thrilling fashion at White Hart Lane in October 2010.

Merson's role as a pundit on Sky Sports has left fans with many moments of laughter and confusion with his bold and audacious opinions.

After hearing what his former player had to say, Wenger didn't seem to take the comments with a pinch of salt, instead stating in his press conference that he isn't interested.

When asked to comment on the 49-year-old TV pundit making a return to the game to play for Welsh four-tier team Caerau, Wenger was not keen to discuss the matter, saying: "We speak about professional football here".
