Watch the freaky first footage from 'The New Mutants'

New Mutants trailer will star Maisie Williams

The studio initially kicked off their mutant superhero franchise with Bryan Singer's X-Men in 2000, which was followed by two more films in the original trilogy before X-Men: First Class rebooted the franchise and X-Men: Days of Future Past rewrote the timeline. Both 2016's Deadpool and this year's Logan have found great success in terms of critical acclaim and box office gross as X-Men spinoff movies.

What we do see are five young mutants, played from everyone from newcomer Blu Hunt to Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams.

"Whilst it's definitely a departure from the X-Men movies, the fans won't be disappointed".

In his Instagram post, Josh Boone included an image, promising that The New Mutants teaser trailer will arrive at 12:01 a.m. PST.

Based on the popular comic book that first appeared in 1982, "The New Mutants" tracks a group of younger age mutants who are just discovering their unbelievable abilities.

The team first appeared in Marvel Comics in 1982 and was co-created by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod, although, this adaption looks to be a little different than its source material. The group is "mentored" by Dr. Cecilia Reyes (Alice Braga, I am Legend). Next spring, X-Men fans will see the arrival of a whole new breed of mutants in the appropriately titled New Mutants.

The film follows five mutants - Maisie (Game of Thrones), Anya (Split), Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things), Henry Zaga (13 Reasons Why), and Blu Hunt (The Originals) - who are told they are in a hospital because they are unsafe.
