Veteran Indonesian goalkeeper Choirul Huda tragically died after colliding with one of his teammates during a league match on Saturday.

Choirul Huda, 38, was pronounced dead after being rushed to hospital with head and neck trauma following the accident with teammate Ramon Rodrigues.

The tragic incident happened during the first-half of a match between Persela Lamongan and Semen Pedang.

Medics immediately rushed onto the pitch to his aide, but sadly the shot-stopper succumbed to his injuries shortly after in hospital. According to reports, he was conscious moments after the collision before complaining of pain in the chest.

"The loss of Choirul Huda has hit us all hard", Santoso added.

Persela paid tribute to Huda on social media, posting he was "the real legend of Persela".

It said that initial analysis revealed the impact was to the chest and lower jaw, resulting in the "possibility of chest trauma, head trauma and neck trauma".

Huda is a legendary figure in Lamongan, having spent his entire playing career with Persela. Having hailed from the region, he made his debut for Persela in 1999 and then became a regular fixture between the sticks.
