Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases told CNN that "in general, we get in our season what the Southern Hemisphere got in the season immediately preceding us and an intelligent guess" is that North America will most likely have a bad flu season.

Currently, the flu vaccine protects against pandemic H1N1, influenza A H3N2and influenza B strains.

The report also states that based on early data from Australia, which is just emerging from its flu season, the influenza vaccine this year may not be effective in combating the virus.

Wednesday morning, the 6 In The Morning crew took time to get their flu shots while they were on the air.

In Idaho, a state resident has died in what health officials are saying is their first flu death of the season. The symptoms may last for a day or two, but are much less severe than actual influenza, according to the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases.

San Diego County's Health and Human Services Agency announced Wednesday that the number if influenza cases rose sharply as compared to this time past year.

People with allergies to vaccine ingredients can often receive the vaccine safely, if it is given in a doctors office where they can be monitored.

An 86-year-old San Diego man who had not been vaccinated died on October 1. Health officials say San Diego has already reported 203 laboratory-confirmed flu cases this season, whereas past year at this time, there were only 60 confirmed flu cases.

The county also released a list of things people can do to avoid the risk of getting the flu.

"Getting vaccinated is the best protection against flu illness", said CDPH state health officer Karen Smith, MD.
