Taj Mahal a blot on Indian culture, says BJP's Sangeet Som

A shopkeeper in Agra shows off a miniature version of the Taj. Miniatures of the monument are popular picks by tourists to the heritage site

Som made these remarks while addressing a function at Sisoli village in Meerut district on Sunday.

Days after the Uttar Pradesh government dropped the Taj Mahal from the state tourism department's booklet, BJP MLA Sangeet Som justified the move, saying 'the builder of the monument had worked to eliminate Hindus from Uttar Pradesh and India'. What history are we talking about? The man who built Taj Mahal imprisoned his father. "Taj Mahal's creator Shah Jahan imprisoned his father and wanted to wipe out Hindus", said Som. It's our cultural heritage. It is heritage and it is a major tourist spot.

"Taj Mahal is such a non issue but politicians will continue to try and divide this country...aur yaha twitter pe hum RW LW khelte rahe hai (and here on twitter, we will keep playing the game of right wing, left wing)", he wrote.

State Tourism Minister Rita Bahuguna Joshi said that "we are proud of Taj Mahal". "BJP is preaching hatred. I can guarantee that history will be changed", he added.

- Tanmay Bhat (@thetanmay) October 16, 2017The blot on our culture is this plot that is unfolding. "Can Modi & Yogi tell domestic & foreign tourist not to visit TAJ MAHAL?". It's a national symbol of pride now.

The Taj is thought of as one of the seven wonders of the world. Not sure abt culture, but your thinking is definitely a blot on the office you hold.

Besides his controversial remarks on Taj Mahal, Som also said that the Mohammad Ali Jauhar University was a hub of terrorists.

He must be against marbles, having lost his. "Many were sad when Taj Mahal was removed from historical places".

After Taj Mahal was removed from the Uttar Pradesh government's tourism booklet, Pakistani news wire Times of lslamabad had tweeted, "India ignoring Taj Mahal as it reminds them of thousands years of Muslim rule over India".
