Start of production on Sony's Venom teased via social media

'Venom': First Photo From 'Spider-Man' Spin-Off Starring Tom Hardy Hits The Web

In May, Hardy was announced to play the traditional "Spider-Man" villain in Sony Picture's upcoming film focused around Eddie Brock, the first character to become the alien symbiote in the comic books. To commemorate the occasion, the official Venom film Twitter account has shared the first behind-the-scenes photo with lead star Tom Hardy. This may be the first of many teaser pics we see from on Venom Twitter account. Topher Grace first starred as Eddie Brock/Venom in 2007's Spider-Man 3, the most derided of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man movies and the film that kicked the franchise down a spiral of reboots until it finally hit gold again with Spider-Man: Homecoming. Ruben Fleischer, of Zombieland fame (and, uh, Gangster Squad infamy), is directing this one. He's joined in the ensemble by Riz Ahmed, Michelle Williams, Jenny Slate, Reid Scott and Scott Haze.

The film is completely the Marvel Cinematic Universe and won't feature Tom Holland's Spider-Man.

The Venom movie is not exactly a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, though producer Amy Pascal believes there could be some crossover between the two franchises.

Sony also has plans to produce another spinoff based on Black Cat and Silver Sable called Black & Silver, and that movie is set to be directed by Gina Price-Bythewood, who directed the pilot for Cloak & Dagger for Marvel Television.

Venom is scheduled for an October 5, 2018 release.
