Renée Zellweger cast as Judy Garland in upcoming film

The Bridget Jones star will play the ill-fated Wizard of Oz actress and singer in Judy, which will centre on her final concerts in London in the late 1960s.

The film, aptly named, "Judy", will take place in 1968 as Garland is gearing up for her final concerts in London.

The movie is based on a script by The Crown writer Tom Edge, and is set to be directed by Tony nominee and two-time Olivier victor Rupert Goold, reports Variety.

Renée Zellweger has some big ruby slippers to fill.

As well as chronicling her iconic battles with management and her relationship with fans, Judy will delve into her relationship with her soon-to-be fifth husband, nightclub manager Mickey Deans, who she married in March 1969.

Britain's Rupert Goold will direct the biopic, which is set to begin filming in February 2018. Her performance earned her a Best Actress Oscar nomination. After working for 45 of her 47 years, she is exhausted; haunted by memories of a childhood lost to Hollywood and gripped by a desire to be back home with her kids. Oscar victor Renée Zellweger will play the title role in the film that will feature a screenplay by Tom Edge. The aim is to have some of Garland's most famous songs in the movie, so we can likely expect Zellweger once more firing up her pipes as she performs the likes of Over The Rainbow. She also stars in the drama Same Kind of Different as Me, which opened Friday.
