BREAKING NEWS Lisa Wilkinson 57 announced her shock departure from Channel Nine's the Today show after it was alleged co-host Karl Stefanovic 43 earns'twice as much as her

Channel Nine's The Today Show has acknowledged it is a "very big" day for the program following the shock departure of co-host Lisa Wilkinson to join Network Ten, reportedly over a pay dispute.

"Nine today confirmed we have been unable to meet the expectations of Lisa Wilkinson and her manager on a contract renewal for a further period", the statement read.

"Certainly from my perspective, it has been an enormous, tremendous privilege to share a part of Lisa's Today Show chapter and above all it is a tremendous privilege to share a lovely friendship with her and I know that will continue for a very long time to come", Sylvia said.

Her decision to quit after 10 years followed failed pay negotiations, with Nine reportedly refusing to match her salary with that of co-host Karl Stefanovic.

And Lisa's courageous move paid off as Channel Ten have welcomed her with open arms to join their panel on the hugely popular show The Project amid reports from The Daily Telegraph she's set to become the highest-paid woman in Australia.

Wilkinson broke the news on her Twitter account, including an image of a statement from Channel Nine in her post.

Deborah Knight was called in last minute to fill Wilkinson's spot on the program on Tuesday, however who is replacing the much-loved host is yet to be announced.

"I have some news", Wilkinson wrote.

Network Ten announced that from January next year, Wilkinson will host The Project alongside Carrie Bickmore, Waleed Aly, and Peter Helliar, as well as hosting The Sunday Project.

With reports that Nine CEO Hugh Marks was "eager to re-sign the star", The Daily Telegraph reported that "this could be her best and last chance to achieve pay parity".

"Thanks so much to everyone for all your lovely messages". We are thrilled to tiny bits! It's safe to safe to say that we're all a little but shocked and it will take a little while to sink in.He continued: "So for now, just this Lisa".

"So for now this, thank you".

Appearing on The Project on Channel 10 will probably be a welcomed change for the journalist and TV presenter, as it will mean no more alarms going off in the very early hours of the morning. And mostly you go with my love, lots of love, all my love.

Wilkinson went on to acknowledge her colleagues "Karl, Slyvia, Georgie, Tim, Richard, Stevie and Natalia, as well as all the hard-working producers and the entire team behind them cameras - every one of them has contributed".
