Kerala: Walkway Bridge Collapses in Chavara, One Dead, 57 Injured

One dead at least 57 injured in Kerala bridge collapse

A 55-year-old woman was killed and more than 30 other people were injured when a foot overbridge across a canal collapsed at Chavara near Kollam on Monday, police said.

The deceased were identified as Shyamala Devi, Angel alias Rachel and Annamma, all of whom were employees of Kerala Minerals and Metals Limited (KMML), a government facility.

The injured people have been shifted to the nearby hospitals for treatment.

Shyamala Devi died after she fell into the water and iron sheet of the bridge hit her head hard. Search operation was on to find out if anyone was missing in the lake under the bridge. The locals said the bridge was awaiting major repairs for a long time. The accident took place when these labourers used the bridge to cross to the other side after having a meeting with the representatives of the management today morning. Simultaneously, workers of the KMML came out of the plant and were on the bridge.

The collapsed bridge connects the company's complex to its adjacent mineral separation (MS) unit.
