Departure of flights from Kolkata airport were temporarily suspended due to bad weather. Air India said five of its flights to Kolkata could not land at the NSCBIA because of gusty winds and were diverted to other destinations. At least 23 domestic flights were diverted, according to ANI.

"The situation will normalise once the weather conditions improve".

Arrival of as many as 47 flights and departure of about 35 flights was rescheduled and many flights were delayed, an official said.

The heavy rain disrupted normal life in several parts of south Bengal, including Kolkata, where flight and train services and road transportation were affected.

The uprooted trees in many areas of northern and southern Kolkata blocked roads, stalling traffic movement. The weather department said the inclement weather was triggered by a deep depression.

"The deep depression is likely to weaken into a depression and then into a well-marked low pressure and continue to move in a west-northwestward direction towards the Jharkhand border", Das said.

"Under the influence of deep depression over Gangetic West Bengal, heavy to very heavy (7-20cm) rainfall at a few places with isolated extremely heavy (over 20cm) fall is likely over Gangetic West Bengal during next 48 hours", it said.

The local weather office forecast more rains in the next 48 hours.

IMD expects heavy to very heavy rains at isolated places over Gangetic West Bengal and heavy rains over Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Assam and Meghalaya, Madhya Maharashtra, Konkan and Goa, Telangana, Rayalaseema and North Interior Karnataka today.

"As an effect of the system, squally wind speed reaching 45-55 km per hour, gusting to 65 km per hour, will prevail along and off the West Bengal coast", he added.

Meteorological Department on South Bengal has issued warnings to people living in sea areas and fishermen and have been asked not to go to the sea.

Kolkata had recorded 69.4 mm of rain over nine hours till 5.30 pm, a meteorological department official said.
